Switched back to the USB-C to Lightning cable and now, iTunes gives the following prompt: An iPhone has been detected, but it could not be identified properly.Gave the restore prompt 3 times when disconnecting and reconnecting. iTunes either doesn't detect it or it gives the prompt to restore.Tested using my aftermarket flat USB-A to Lightning cable that worked with iPhone 8 and works with iPhone 12 in my 2nd computer.Phone was not disconnected and was still charging through the USB port. Unplugging and plugging in the phone again finally allowed iTunes to detect it but when trying to perform a backup, it would fail stating the phone was disconnected. It gave this prompt 6 times when disconnecting and reconnecting. Go the the Summary tab in iPhone preferences and click Restore to restore this iPhone to factory settings. Restarted iTunes and it prompted the following: iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPhone "insert name of iPhone".Phone charges but at first, iTunes hung after I trusted.Computer detects the phone and I was asked to trust the computer in both iTunes and on the phone. ![]() Used my 3rd PC with an Asus B450 motherboard which doesn't have USB2.0 ports. My 1st PC with the MSI motherboard is currently offline. This is of course, just a guess on my part. I can only conclude from this that the new iPhone "expects" to be connected via USB-c, at least for passing data or connecting to iTunes. I then decided to use the new lightning-USB-C cable provided in the iPhone 12 box, and connected it to the one USB-c port on my computer and.walla. So I tried all of them including some on the back of the machine and nothing worked. Now, when I attempted to connect the new iPhone 12 to the same computer using an older (ie, the same cable I used to backup the 6s) original Apple lightning cable, first the computer complained about possible defective USB ports. So I made a full backup in iTunes without problems. I had no problem plugging in my iPhone 6s to the USB-A port and being detected by both Windows and the computer. My system is a fairly new Ryzen 7 homebuilt using an Asus Crosshair VII with two USB2-A, two USB3-A, and one USB-C ports on the top of case. Just came across this thread today because I too was having issues trying to connect and use iTunes to restore my new iPhone 12 from the backup I made today with my old iphone 6s.
